Note his musculature / This guy could really throw a spear / Athena? Steadfast with a warrior / 2nd C AD? / Carved ivory in its frame / About twice actual size / I hope she kept him safe / She keeps him still / Selçuk Museum / No information

This small carving is about 3 1/2 X 5 inches big, small enough to be carried by a soldier as a talisman in war, or kept by a loved one at home. It was expensive, carved in ivory, and the face of the soldier looks to be a portrait. To me it seems to be Athena protecting a Roman soldier, but it’s really anyone’s guess as to what it means. She could be an Amazon; she has only one breast.
