A hot summer day, a fine sermon, and orange Tommy Cat delighting us all by winding his way along the bottom of the marble pulpit at Christchurch in Beyoglu. Each marble column in this antique pulpit is marble from the area of one of the Seven Churches of St Paul, in Antalya. Our black Christ is Ethiopian. Pastor Ian Sherwood is Irish, and sings the Anglican service in a fine baritone. Tommy Cat, now in Kitty Heaven, was a native of Istanbul who lived a fine life in the Parsonage garden outside the church, which was built in the 1850s. It’s the only church I’ve ever been in where the rood screen was painted by someone who is still alive.
